Aviation-grade high-strength material 0Cr13Ni8Mo2Al (13-8Mo) precipitation hardened stainless steel

0Cr13Ni8Mo2Al (US designation 13-8Mo) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel developed by Allegheny Ludlum in the 1960s. It is designed specifically to meet the demanding aerospace industry requirements for high strength, toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance. It utilizes a dual vacuum melting process (VIM+VAC-ESR/VAR)—vacuum induction melting followed by vacuum consumable remelting or electroslag remelting—to ensure ultra-high purity and structural uniformity, meeting the ultimate demand for material reliability in critical aviation components.

    Material performance advantages

    1. Perfect combination of high strength and high toughness

    Unique composition design:

    Cr

    Ni

    Mo

    Al

    12.25%-13.25%

    7.5%-8.5%

    2.00%-2.50%

    0.90%-1.35%

Through heat treatment (H950 and other states), the tensile strength can reach above 1515 MPa and the yield strength can reach above 1415 MPa, while maintaining an elongation of up to 10% and an impact energy of 39 J, which is far superior to ordinary martensitic stainless steel.

The aluminum (Al) element forms a NiAl intermetallic compound phase, which precipitates during the aging process to achieve precipitation strengthening, while the addition of molybdenum (Mo) further improves the strength, toughness and tempering resistance of the material.

    2. Excellent corrosion resistance

The high chromium content provides good matrix corrosion resistance, especially in the aged state, its resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is significantly better than that of common precipitation hardening stainless steels such as 17-4PH.

It performs excellently in seawater, humid atmosphere and neutral salt spray environments, and is suitable for long-term service in harsh environments.

    3. Excellent fatigue performance and fracture toughness

Double vacuum smelting greatly reduces the content of oxide inclusions and harmful gases ([O]≤20ppm, [N]≤60ppm), resulting in high fatigue strength and low crack growth rate.

It can still maintain high strength and stability in high temperature (≤430℃) environment and has good creep resistance.

    4. Good process performance

The solid solution state (Condition A) has a low hardness (HRC≈32), making it easy to machine, cold form and weld (TIG/MIG).

Through a simple single low-temperature aging (510 ℃ -595 ℃), with small heat treatment deformation, making it suitable for the manufacture of precision parts.

    Typical application areas

Aerospace: Engine compressor blades, turbine shafts, gears, fasteners and structural parts that meet the strict specifications of FAA, NASA, etc.

Nuclear Industry and Energy: Nuclear reactor components, steam turbine blades, high-pressure pump shafts, radiation-resistant and stable at high temperatures.

Military equipment: missile structural parts, submarine components, and armored vehicle load-bearing parts, taking into account both lightweight and protective needs.

High-end manufacturing: oil drilling tools, medical devices (surgical knife handles, implant substrates), good biocompatibility.

    Summarize

0Cr13Ni8Mo2Al (13-8Mo), thanks to its ultra-high purity achieved through double vacuum smelting, exceptional balance of strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, and stable heat-treatability, has become an irreplaceable key material in the aviation, nuclear, and military industries. Its creation embodies the pursuit of extreme material performance in high-end equipment and remains the performance benchmark among precipitation-hardening stainless steels. Choosing 13-8Mo means choosing the perfect balance of reliability and high performance!
